The mornings at Chateau Martin are pretty darn hectic! Anything that adds to the craziness is not welcome...no sir. Imagine my surprise when after getting Piper out of her bed Jason called me into the room and said he thought something was wrong with her eye. Yep...there was definitely something wrong! It was swelled to about 2 times its size and was all gunky (is that a word)!? It looked like I had a trip to the doctor to add to my day. Luckily...a good friend of mine that lived here for a short time was in town to have the movers pack up all of her stuff. I promptly called her and she detailed just how to visit the doctor here.
A trip to a Belgian doctor is NOTHING like what we are used to in the US. First, when you call to get the appointment you are almost always speaking to the actual doctor. Second, no trip to their office building for you...nope...their office is typically part of their house. I called the doctor and said that I thought that Piper had pink-eye. Luckily, he got us in pretty quick. We made the trip to his house and he saw us. There are no reception staff, no nurses, just him. Of...and by the way...he writes your information down on a piece of graph paper and makes change, after you have paid him in cash, from his wallet.
He was a very nice man, and after he prescribed eye drops for the pink eye, he asked me if there was anything else we needed any medicine for. I spoke to him about going on the cruise for Fall Break and about how I was worried about motion-sickness for the family. He promptly gave me a perscription for that medicine too and told me exactly what dosage to give each person in my family. In the US I probably would have had to make separate appointments for each person. I guess that would be a mark in the "Pro" column.
