Uh-ohhhhhhh.....

The mornings at Chateau Martin are pretty darn hectic!  Anything that adds to the craziness is not welcome...no sir.  Imagine my surprise when after getting Piper out of her bed Jason called me into the room and said he thought something was wrong with her eye.  Yep...there was definitely something wrong!  It was swelled to about 2 times its size and was all gunky (is that a word)!?  It looked like I had a trip to the doctor to add to my day.  Luckily...a good friend of mine that lived here for a short time was in town to have the movers pack up all of her stuff.  I promptly called her and she detailed just how to visit the doctor here.

A trip to a Belgian doctor is NOTHING like what we are used to in the US.  First, when you call to get the appointment you are almost always speaking to the actual doctor.  Second, no trip to their office building for you...nope...their office is typically part of their house.  I called the doctor and said that I thought that Piper had pink-eye.  Luckily, he got us in pretty quick.  We made the trip to his house and he saw us.  There are no reception staff, no nurses, just him.  Of...and by the way...he writes your information down on a piece of graph paper and makes change, after you have paid him in cash, from his wallet.

He was a very nice man, and after he prescribed eye drops for the pink eye, he asked me if there was anything else we needed any medicine for.  I spoke to him about going on the cruise for Fall Break and about how I was worried about motion-sickness for the family.  He promptly gave me a perscription for that medicine too and told me exactly what dosage to give each person in my family.  In the US I probably would have had to make separate appointments for each person.  I guess that would be a mark in the "Pro" column.

Piper's music class

I joined the American Women's Club of Brussels (AWCB) and they offer a lot of fun classes to take.  I was excited to see that one of the new classes on the Fall schedule was a music class with Fairy Deb.  I was happy that they were offering it because in the past I always did something like this with Cole, Liv and Sophie.

Piper's class is every Friday.  We get to sing songs and dance.  It is a lot of fun and Piper is really enjoying it.  Her favorite part is when Fairy Deb pulls out the bubble machine and they start flying!

All good things...

As the saying goes, "All good things must come to an end."  My surprise was a fantastic one.  We got to celebrate my birthday and Gina's together.  The day after her birthday, on September 26th, Jason loaded Gina up into his car and took her to the airport.

I have said a lot of goodbyes in the 12 years I have lived away from home, and I have gotten somewhat used to them.  I was okay the morning she left, but got very sad when Jason posted this picture of her on Facebook.

We are many, many more miles away from home now, so I like to say it isn't goodbye, it will be SO LONG FOR NOW.

We are very much looking forward to our next visit!

Proud to be an American!

It always seems to be that every time Gina comes for a visit we are always putting her to work doing some school project, making signs for something I volunteered for, etc.  While she was here Cole had a big project due for the first Unit of Inquiry of the year...Who Are We?

The 4th Graders had to create a poster detailing the country they are from.  It was divided up into three parts.  Two parts had to do with the US and the third, and final part, had to do with information about Cole being a U.S. Citizen.

Cole liked the finish product...and...Gina and I had to pat ourselves on the back.  P.S...Gina's pat was bigger!   Thanks again, Aunt Gina!

Ladies who lunch...

We decided to venture out of the 'BUNKER' and took a trip to Ikea.  We shopped until we dropped and then had lunch in the Cafe.  The highlight of the day...showing Aunt Gina how to work the ice cream machine.  We all decided that it would make a GREAT present for Nana and are wondering where we could pick one up.  We didn't happen upon one in The Marketplace though...BUMMER!!  Our search continues...

Happy Birthday to ME!

I have to say that I had already received the best birthday present...a visit from my Sister, but the surprises kept on coming and I had a really nice day.  Jason came home from work with cupcakes, flowers, a new purse, necklace and scarf.  We had dinner from The Sushi Shop and I got to blow out the candles...well...a candle...a Yankee Candle of all things!

Calling all kickers...

It's that time of year once again.  Soccer season has begun and our #1 player is ready to score!  Liv signed up for Soccer through the Brussels Sports Association or BSA.  Jason decided to help coach so she is off and running.  Liv was really excited that she got her favorite number...#7!  She also was really excited that Aunt Gina was visiting and got to scope out the action.

Good luck, Liv!  Have a great season!
